History

Shatterstar comes from a hundred years in an alternate future of the extra dimensional planet Mojoworld, which is ruled by the alien tyrant Mojo. Shatterstar’s whole body has been scientifically redesigned to become the ultimate warrior in that worlds’ combat/performance gladiatorial games. Shatterstar learned the arts of battle as a warrior in arenas on Mojoworld, where he was forced to participate in combats staged for Mojo’s television programs. Eventually, however, he escaped and became a rebel and joined the Cadre Alliance that sought to overthrow Mojo’s dictatorship.

Hoping to get help from the X-Men, the Cadre Alliance sent Shatterstar into the past, pursued by Mojo’s warriors. Instead of the X-Men, he found their associate team, the New Mutants, and fought with them against his pursuers. After the battle, he became a founding member as the New Mutants became the team X-Force, in return for their promise to help him in his rebellion. Shatterstar served with X-Force for a long tenure, later forming a friendship with teammate Rictor, who helped Shatterstar adjust to his new and different world.

Years later, Shatterstar, to his bewilderment, learned his life was somehow linked to a young man named Benjamin Russell. Soon afterwards, Mojo captured Shatterstar and returned him to his universe, revealing that Shatterstar’s destiny was to try to slay Mojo and die in the attempt. X-Force and Longshot traveled to Mojo’s universe and rescued their teammate, only to find him dying, trapped in a digitized state by Mojo.

Mojo’s sometime ally Spiral teleported Shatterstar back into reality, where he regained his true form. Spiral brought Shatterstar to the Weisman Institute for the Criminally Insane in Rutland, Vermont. There Spiral directed them to the bedside of one of its patients, a mutant named Benjamin Russell who had no living relatives, had been in a coma since his powers had emerged, and, curiously, greatly resembled Shatterstar. Longshot transferred Shatterstar’s soul into Benjamin Russell’s body, and the two became one. Apparently Shatterstar’s body merged with Russell’s as well, for the resulting body bore the starburst pattern that Shatterstar had around his left eye. Restored to full health and consciousness, Shatterstar resumed his work as a member of X-Force.
