History
Dinah Lance was born into a family of crime fighters her father Larry Lance, was a police officer and her mother Diana Lance, was the original Black Canary, blessed with the meta-human ability of a sonic cry, when Dinah was 19 she decided to follow on in the family business and donned her mother’s costume and became a crime fighter.
Shortly after becoming the second Black Canary, Dinah meet four other crime fighters and they collectively formed the Justice League of America, a name Dinah chose in remembrance of the original team her mother was part of, the Justice Society of America. It was during this time Dinah first met Oliver Queen, Green Arrow and they worked together as part of the JLA.
Black Canary worked with the JLA for many years, along side Green Arrow and the others, her friendship with Oliver soon blossomed into a romance, and although it looked as if the relationship would die after he left the JLA and moved to Star City to work on his own, Black Canary soon followed him. Green Arrow remained restless and soon moved on again, although Black Canary joined him on the road a few times their relationship seemed to be over.
Black Canary continued to work solo, and shortly with the new JLA until, Green Arrow decided to settle down in Seattle, Dinah soon followed him and the two of them set up a florist, Sherwood Florist, as well as help cleaning the streets of crime. During this time Dinah kidnapped by a drug dealer she was investigating, whilst in captivity she was severally tortured and she lost her meta-human sonic cry and any chance of having a child.
The events of the kidnapping affected Dinah badly, her relationship with Oliver suffered, but her love of crime fighting grew and she soon started to fight super villain, again rather then the criminal she had dealt with in Seattle. Her relationship with Oliver ended when she realised, his passionate beliefs would always stop him committing to her. Black Canary stayed on in Seattle, trying to avoid Green Arrow, the final blow came when she was approached by Connor Hawke, Oliver’s son, the second Green Arrow, he told her Oliver had died over Metropolis whilst fighting some eco-terrorists.
Faced with a failing career, old memories and mounting debt, when Black Canary was approached by the mysterious Oracle with a job offer she jumped on the first plane to Gotham and so began there partnership. For a long time, Dinah’s employer remained a secretive voice on the end of a receiver, their work together has lead to many interesting adventures, including a meeting with Ra’s Al Ghul, bravely Black Canary took a dip in the Lazarus Pit completely healed all her prior injuries, giving her back her Canary Cry.
She is currently working with Oracle as a team member of the Birds of Prey.
